Car!

A GIF of a quick drawing demo for my class. It's great to be drawing cars again!

Project: Game of Thrones Countdown # 003

Another armor study. Varying the colors just a bit to see if  I can add more punch than the source photo. Fun learning process for this one. Was really interesting to find out how some values don't seem to work until you place another value next to it.

Thanks for viewing!

Project: Game of Thrones Countdown # 002

Teh second photo study...a little past the due date of the usual G.O.T TV night time-slot. I focused a little harder to really nail some of the colors with some other color choices thrown in just to experiment. The armor itself was interesting as the chest guard thing looks like a bib, heh. Fun piece...though I think I spent way more than my originally allotted studying time.

Project: Game of Thrones Countdown # 001

So I've got a really bad case of Game of Thrones withdrawal symptoms now that season 4 is over. To calm some of the jitters, and also to clear my mind of the fight of the series between the Red Viper and the Mountain, I've decided to do armor studies on what would otherwise be Game Of Thrones TV night. Here's the first one. I've modified it a bit because the original armor looks like it has a slight belly...not too knightly in my opinion.

Late night photo study

A lot of fun doing this one...though definitely tough getting the likeness just right. Needs just that bit more to nail it.

Anatomy rendering with edge control and smudge brush

Going back to human anatomy studies focusing on skin tones and values rendering. Really working at getting that photo real look with minimal work. Edge control in contrast to blending with the smudge brush was interesting. Thanks for sharing your photoshop techniques Mr Robot Pencil! Have to still figure out a way to duplicate the look of water and bumpy skin texture...

Another value study...too slow though...was done half asleep. These are all real life armor and are so awesome! When I grow up I want to be a knight and get my own armor!

I miss sleep...but I miss drawing even more when I'm not drawing. An hour long value study. Learned a LOT  from this exercise. There is so much subtlety in the shadows.

My insomnia is starting to really bug me...so I'm drawing bugs    /= p
Will probably go back to this one and refine it some more at a later date.

A late night quick sketch continued from some rough thumbnail compositions done in class. I did some quick reference gathering and aim to finish each piece in an hour or less. Looking forward to taking all the pieces to a nice black and white finish. Will add color if I get some extra time at the end of the week!

*GIF Update February 8th late night/early am. On to the second one!...but need to catch some sleep for now...

*All three sketches done late night on February 12th!*

Another sketchie...fixated on drawing cow skulls lately. This one took a little too much time though, and I definitely need some reference for the weak sauce armor. Trying to learn more about lighting...hence fireball! Learned a few things but really need to do more studies to be more convincing.

Late night photo studies. Concentrating on rendering the glow of skin and also focusing on lighting and materials as well. 1 and 2 are pretty crap, 3 is a little better, 4 is close. Lots of fun! Though I need to speed up on these.

Two vehicle studies...one with the progression shown. My goal is to draw at least one vehicle a day. Really fun to do...though wheels are tough without an ellipse guide!

Friday, October 19, 2012

Late night portrait studies of President Barrack Obama and his challenger, Governor Mitt Romney. Fun to paint but definitely challenging to nail a good likeness to both of their faces. I'll start to challenge myself now with more speed and better accuracy and better palette choices as well.

Some more vehicle studies. When I draw cars, it just feels really relaxing...Zen chill.

Quick pen sketch of a Mini Cooper. Highlights done afterwards in photoshop. I love cars! They are really one of my favorite subjects and though the proportions on this Mini are off; it feels great(!) to sketch from life again...it's been awhile. Gotta go out sketching more often!!!

*Stay tuned for a BIG art upload in a few days from all the talented artists in my classes from this spring semester*

I'm starting to feel a lot of joy and relaxation in painting this insomnia series of photo studies. My manual color matching is still slightly off...but it's fun to see how colors work without relying on formulaic color theories. I really should have taken traditional painting classes when I was still in school. Instead, I'm now learning things in reverse with the goal of eventually using real honest to goodness oil paints! Hah! Good night all! ZZZ...

Insomnia Episode 2: The caffeine strikes back...
Here's another early morning photo study from a picture found online. A lot faster this time...around 40 or so minutes. Very loose painterly attempt. I gotta learn to paint better leaves. Other than that, this one was fun!

*If you're the photographer of this particular shot please let me know so I can credit you!

Insomnia induced internet photo study this time...of a place on the Maldives islands. Focusing mainly on replicating tones and values. Concentrating really hard on simplifying the shapes as well. Took a little over 2 hours for this one...too much time! Still really stuck too much on details and noodling...doh! Simplify, simplify, simplify!
